Motorists are being urged to plan ahead if they expect to travel on the Malahat this B.C. Day long weekend.

The B.C Ministry of Transportation issued a travel advisory on Wednesday saying significant traffic congestion is expected along the corridor starting on Thursday evening, and suggesting drivers leave extra time to reach their destinations.

To keep traffic flowing, the ministry said, work at the Malahat Tunnel Hill project site will be paused from noon on Friday until 7 a.m. on Tuesday. Construction speed limits will remain in effect, however.

People planning to use the route are advised to travel early in the morning or later in the evening, when traffic is likely to be lighter.

Due to the heat, drivers should ensure they pack plenty of water, food and supplies for passengers and pets in case they encounter unexpected delays, the ministry said.

Drivers were also reminded to be aware of road conditions and observe traffic-management personnel and signs in the area.
