A light snow flurry over the Malahat this morning has subsided and is forecast to give way to mild temperatures and a mix of sun and cloud by afternoon throughout the capital region.
Snow continued to fall overnight and this morning on Vancouver Island in Langford, Nanaimo, the Comox Valley and Port Alberni.
There were at least two weather-related accidents this morning in the West Shore — one on the Trans Canada Highway and then one on Rocky Point Road, according to West Shore RCMP. Both were minor, police said.
West Shore Cpl. Kathy Rochlitz reports there is still snow on the ground in Langford and roads there are wet with some icy spots.
“We continue to encourage drivers to adjust their driving habits to address the change in road and weather conditions,” Rochlitz said.
“As always in the Capital Region area, you can go from an area with just rain to an area with snow and icy roads in a short period of time; we all need to be able to adapt to these changes,” Rochlitz said, in an email.
A wind warning is now in effect for strong southeasterly winds up to 70 km/h are forecast to hit East Vancouver Island including Nanaimo and the Comox Valley this evening.
“Scattered precipitation will persist over the area through today and become widespread this evening as the system approaches,” according to Environment Canada’s website. “The relatively cold air that is already in place will ensure that much of the precipitation will fall as snow especially over higher elevations.”
The precipitation is expected to switch to rain early Wednesday, according to Environment Canada. It says some areas in Metro Vancouver and Sunshine Coast could get 10 to 15 centimeters.
Snowfall warnings could expand to other regions as the weather system gets closer.
