When the West Shore RCMP officer saw a Jeep Cherokee drive over a grass median and head west on Sooke Road, he stopped the Jeep and saw that the 23-year-old driver was exhibiting signs of alcohol intoxication.

A suspected impaired driver pulled over Wednesday ended up thanking the officer who caught him and drove him home, and asking for a hug, West Shore RCMP say.

“We don’t often get thanked for the job we do, especially by those who find themselves in the opposite side of the law,” said Cpl. Nancy Saggar. “It was nice for the officer and for the rest of us at West Shore RCMP to hear this.”

The officer was looking into another matter when he saw a Jeep Cherokee drive over a grass median and head west on Sooke Road.

He stopped the Jeep and saw that the 23-year-old driver was exhibiting signs of alcohol intoxication. Breath samples were tested with a roadside-screening device, resulting in a 90-day driving prohibition and three-day impoundment of the vehicle.

The officer gave the man a ride home. Once there, the man thanked him for keeping the roads safe and asked for a hug.

Police said that with the holiday season approaching, the public can expect to see check stops being conducted around the community. They urged people to plan a safe ride home.
