Driver faces $2,000 in fines after string of crashes in Langford

Police arrived to find bystanders trying to prevent the apparently impaired driver of a Chevrolet Cruze from continuing to drive after she’d collided with a GMC Sierra

A 24-year-old woman was given a roadside prohibition and is facing more than $2,000 in fines after a series of collisions in Langford.

The string of crashes included one where a vehicle’s licence plate was left behind.

West Shore RCMP were called Monday around 6:30 p.m. about a collision on Leigh Road near Costin Avenue, and arrived to find bystanders trying to prevent the driver of a Chevrolet Cruze from continuing to drive after she’d collided with a GMC Sierra.

The driver of the Cruze was displaying signs of impairment, police said, and refused to co-operate with officers.

She was arrested for obstructing a police officer, driving while impaired and failing to remain at the scene of collision.

Police were also able to connect her to two hit-and-run incidents that had happened just minutes before.

They said the woman had hit a chain-link fence on Tennis Court Lane — leaving her car’s licence plate behind — and also struck a parked vehicle at Bray Avenue and Rita Road, leaving it with extensive front-end damage.

“It’s remarkable that no one suffered major injuries in this incident,” said Cpl. Nancy Saggar. “We are thankful to the bystanders who called police right away. They prevented the driver from continuing to wreak havoc on the roadway by driving impaired.”

The woman was given an immediate roadside prohibition for refusing to provide a breath sample, and her vehicle was towed and will be impounded for 30 days.

She must pay towing and and impoundment fees, administrative penalties and a licence reinstatement fee for a total of at least $1,500.

The charge of failing remain at the scene of a collision carries a $368 fine, and she was also given a $196 ticket for failing to stop after an incident that resulted in damage to property.
