Downtown loses power after Splash

A power outage Sunday night interrupted traffic lights in downtown Victoria and resulted in one crash at an intersection.

A motorcycle collided into the back of another motorcycle at Douglas and Chatham Streets around 10:30 p.m., said Victoria police Staff Sgt. Tom Sawyer.

The intersection lights were dark because of the power outage, and one of the motorcycles had stopped to allow another vehicle to pass, said Sawyer. The second motorcycle collided into the back of the first, he said.

One driver suffered a possible broken hip, said Sawyer.

The power outage started at 9:46 p.m. after birds hit a downtown power line, according to B.C. Hydro. More than 1,000 people were affected, and traffic lights were out at several Victoria intersections. Power was restored by 11:09 p.m.

Though as many as 40,000 people had gathered downtown for the Symphony Splash celebrations, there were no other police incidents, said Sawyer.
