Firefighters tried to resuscitate a dog at a Colwood house fire Thursday morning, but were unable to save it.

“Some of the firefighters that were on scene took it a little hard,” said acting Colwood Fire Chief Greg Chow. “Obviously we’re all human and have pets ourselves.”

A pet-resuscitation device that fits over the mouth was used, Chow said.

He said the owner had been away and called 911 when he got home and saw smoke about 9 a.m. Crews arrived to find one-half of a duplex in the 2300-block of Sooke Road on fire and were able to extinguish it quickly

Damage is estimated at about $100,000. The cause has not yet been determined but it does not appear to be suspicious.
