DUCKITT, Audrey Eleanor

December 25, 1926 - October 8, 2012

Audrey died peacefully in her sleep on October 8th. She was predeceased by her husband Tom in 1998 and is survived by her son Gerry and daughter Janice, grandchildren Abby and Ally and sisters Barbara (Leo) Ciarniello and Maxine (Dave) Ginter. Audrey was born and raised in Ponoka, Alberta where she grew up on a farm. At age 19 Audrey attended Sprott Shaw Business College in Victoria and met Tom and they married a short time after in 1947. Audrey was a hard working woman who had a wide range of jobs during her working life. The last job Audrey held was with the Sergeant-At-Arms in the Parliament Buildings where she worked as an attendant for 12 years and so enjoyed it. Audrey loved cooking, sewing, knitting, dancing, playing bridge, lawn bowling, travelling abroad and last but not least a good gin and tonic. After suffering a broken back in 1999 Audrey eventually moved to Edmonton to be close to Janice and receive the care she required. Even with the challenges that presented themselves in her later years Audrey was always able to see the positive side of life she lived to the fullest regardless of her limitations and never complained. Audrey always put her family first and her greatest joy was being able to spend time with her children and grand daughters. Her family would like to give special thanks to the staff on 4C of the Edmonton General Hospital for the exceptional care and kindness shown to her during her final 4 years.

Her remains have been cremated and a ceremony will be held next year in her honour.

Thank you so much Mom for all you have done for us as you were an incredible

Mother, friend and Grandmother and we will miss you so much.

GRAHAM, Sylvia

June 4, 1923 - November 11, 2012

Sylvia was born in Montreal in 1923 and moved with her family to England where she spent her school years in the village of Haddenham, west of London. During the Depression, her father, a distinguished engineer, took a cut in pay to keep others working in his firm and made up the shortfall as a market gardener, working alongside the housekeeper, the cook and the gardener who had come with the rented vicarage and had nowhere else to go in difficult times. This made a lasting impression on Sylvia and she was to spend the rest of her life working to help people in need without the slightest concern for where her station in life was presumed to be. She returned to Montreal in 1939 to study architecture at McGill University. Between terms she volunteered at her uncle's hospital in Wakefield Quebec where she met a young man from the Department of Foreign Affairs who was convalescing there, Colin Graham. They married in 1946 and moved to California where Colin studied art before moving to Victoria in 1951 to become the founding curator of the new Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. For more than 4 decades Sylvia worked tirelessly as a volunteer to support Colin and the Gallery, first as a member of the Women's Committee raising funds and organizing events, and later as a docent, bringing art to children in public schools. After Colin retired, they moved to Sidney where Sylvia continued her life of community service, driving the elderly to doctors' appointments, working to redress injustices to native communities and volunteering in the Beacon Community Services Thrift Shop to raise funds for community projects. She raised three boys, Alan, John and James, and took an active interest in all their endeavours. She was thrilled to have daughters when John married Pam (Sherwin) and James married Juliet, and when grandchildren arrived --first Tookie and Logan and later Daisy and Olive --she loved nothing more than to play with them when they were little and to hear of their many adventures and dreams as they grew. Whether with family, friends or complete strangers, Sylvia treated everyone with kindness and respect and was genuinely interested in everything around her. She died November 11, 2012 at the age of 89, still looking forward to her next adventure.

To celebrate her life, a tea will be held on Wednesday, December 5, at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, 1040 Moss St, from 2 - 4 pm. A special fund is being set up in her honour at the Gallery for those wishing to donate in her memory to a cause she held so dear.

LAKE, Frances Elizabeth Averil (Betty)

(nee Wheatley)

Died peacefully on November 7, 2012, in Victoria B.C. in her 94th year. Betty was born April 14, 1919, in Maple Creek, Sask. During the Depression, she lived with a great aunt in Oak Bay where she graduated from high school and trained as a secretary. Her husband and the love of her life, Richard (Dick) Lake, died in March, 2005. Survived by daughter, Liz (Michael) Graham; son, Peter (Andrea Wilhelm); granddaughters, Christina Harris (Kathryn Saunders), of Duncan, BC, Janna Harris Bakla (Hakan Bakla) of Vancouver, BC and Clara Lake, of Haida Gwaii, (who arrived just in time for Betty's 90th birthday); step-grandchildren, Flora (Alastair) Fyfe-Graham and Angus Graham and step-great-grandchild, Fraser Fyfe-Graham of London UK. Married November 14, 1946, in Vancouver, Betty, Dick and their two children, Elizabeth (Liz) and Peter, moved to Edmonton in 1958 for seven years. During five of those years Betty was an elected trustee and chair with the Jasper Place School Board where, during those baby boom years, half the town's population was in school. The Lake family moved back to Vancouver in 1965. Dick and Betty lived in Calgary from 1975 to 1979. Dick retired from PWA and they then moved to Ardmore in North Saanich. Betty was a proud member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, where, as she said, she did the "holy laundry" for many years as a member of the altar guild. Betty was the family link for many nieces and nephews throughout Canada and the U.S. She kept them all close to her heart; always present for support, comfort and a birthday phone call. Betty overcame many serious health challenges, and her mantra until very recently was "You're stuck with me; I'm too ornery to quit." Betty was predeceased by her two older brothers, Gwynne and Keith, her older sister, Joan Rothman and her younger sister, Alison Newcomb. The family was deeply moved by the warmth and love shown to Betty by the staff community of Amica at Douglas House, where she lived for the past seven years.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1: 30 p.m. on Saturday, December 1st, 2012 at Holy Trinity Church, 1319 Mills Road, North Saanich. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the charity of your choice. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com.

SHELDRICK, Evelyn Grace

October 30, 1928 - November 19, 2012

Evelyn passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on Nov. 19th. Born in Macklin, Saskatchewan on Oct. 30, 1928, she grew up on the family farm in nearby Primate. She had wonderful stories to tell about her early days on the prairies even though farm life was often difficult. When the family moved to Victoria in 1945, Evelyn began working at David Spencer's Department Store. There she met her future husband Mason Sheldrick and they were married in 1950. They started their family soon after and Lyn remained at home to raise their three daughters. Due to Mason's involvement in local lacrosse, she became an avid fan of the sport and was a regular at all the Shamrocks' home games. A very active member of First Baptist Church, Lyn served in several roles. She was a deacon and trustee for many years, a member of the choir for 65 years, and served on a variety of committees. Known for her sense of humour, she also enjoyed telling jokes and performing skits and songs at church social events. Humour was a big part of her life. Quick to laugh and able to see the funny side of almost any situation, laughing until tears flowed was a common occurrence at home. The two most important things in Lyn's life were her family and her Christian faith. She was a strong woman with an optimistic yet practical outlook on life and she approached all of life's obstacles with grace, dignity and determination. Caring and compassionate, she was an inspiration to her family and many others whose lives she touched. Her greatest joys were spending time with family, working in her garden and being involved with her many different activities at the church; she also enjoyed watching lacrosse, reading, and doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Predeceased by her parents, Lyall and Alverta Beattie, husband Mason and sister Audrie, Lyn is survived by her loving daughters Janice, Tracey, and Dawn (Ken), granddaughter Paige, step-grandchildren Danielle and Liam and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was much loved and will be deeply missed. Heartfelt thanks go to the members of First Baptist Church for their support and prayers during her illness and also to the wonderfully caring people at Victoria Hospice who were so helpful to both Lyn and her family during her final days.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Dec. 7, 2012 at 2: 00 pm at First Baptist Church, 877 North Park St, Victoria BC, V8W 1S9, with Reverends Ken Hillmer and Gord Patterson officiating; a reception will follow. Tage left this world peacefully at Royal Jubilee Hospital, in the company of family members. He is survived by brothers Borge & Preben and sisters Doris & Lilian, all in Denmark; former wife Rita (Carnes); sons Ole, Lars & Pete; daughters-in-law Louise, Ruby & Carolyn; grandchildren Darren, Darcy, Cody, Jessica & Jason; great granddaughter Avery. He was predeceased by his father Ole & mother Valborg. Tage was born in Vrejlev, Denmark. After being raised on a farming co-op, he began a successful career at sea at 15 years old. Tage advanced to the rank of 1st mate, taught navigation school, was in harbour police and was short-listed to become harbour master of Copenhagen. He was involved in WW2 in the merchant marines, was sunk twice, saved lives of crew members and helped smuggle Jewish citizens to safety in Sweden. Upon emigrating to Canada in 1957, Tage began a new life settling his family in Sault Ste Marie ON. Canadian policy changes ended his sailing career whereupon he began to 'sail' on land, until finally retiring at 72. Tage moved to Victoria BC in 2002, to be closer to his sons & their families. A more loving, supportive & devoted father, there were none. His time was spent as a painter, an avid crossword master & anchor to his family.

Tage's wishes were to be cremated and returned to the sea. At his request, no funeral nor wake shall be had, but a small gathering in its place. In lieu of flowers, donations in Tage's name to World Vision would be most welcome. "We will always miss you, Papa... but feel blessed to have had you so long in our lives. Fair winds..."
