HOWLETT, Gregory Thomas

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Gregory Thomas Howlett in a tragic accident on November 7th. Greg was a devoted husband to wife Joanne for almost 33 cherished years. Daughters, Alysha and Jennifer were the apples of his eye. His only brother, Ronald David Howlett will forever miss his 'little' brother. He will be greatly missed by family, friends and co-workers. Greg was an avid water skier and spent every weekend on the water at Lake Cowichan. He was so excited to see his dreams starting to come true; building a home at Lake Cowichan and spending summers boating and water skiing with the family. Greg was waiting for the day to cherish the simple pleasures of a Corona on the dock at the end of the day. Unfortunately his dreams were cut tragically short. Greg was always active and dedicated to physical fitness. More recently working out was way to manage the stress of losing his father Clifford Howlett, his Aunt Gladys Deveau, as well as the family dog Sage. Greg was a dedicated and loyal employee, site superintendent for Island West Coast developments. He recently completed the Country Grocer store on Bowen Road in Nanaimo. He was always concerned about his employees and made sure they had the right tools to get the job done. Greg will be remembered for being selfless and putting others needs first. He always found a way to make things better, his humour, and his smile would light up your day. The family would like to thank the angels, who helped at the scene of the accident, for calling emergency services and helping Joanne in such a traumatic experience. Honey Forbes, the coroner, and Sharon Driscoll at Cowichan Valley Hospital, helped to manage the family's nightmare. The family requests that in lieu of followers that donation be made to Type 1 diabetes.

There will be a notice in the paper for a celebration of life, to be held later on in Nanaimo. We will all raise a Corona in fondest memory and Greg would say No lime! We will have Cajun nuts on the side. He saved the corn nuts for Jen and shared his dark chocolate with Alysha.

He was an active member of the Capital City Club for 36 years and from this established many cherished, long term friendships. Bob was passionate about his job and being around people... he loved it until the end! Bob was always armed with his camera, spending hours developing his own pictures and sharing them with family and friends. Many weekends were spent fishing from his boat and taking trips with the boys to the San Juan Islands. Bob had a love of music that ranged from Pink Floyd to Santana to Rod Stewart. He always had something to play for whoever would listen! His infatuation with electronic gadgets and having to buy the latest product was legendary. He always had to have the most current version of everything! But what most defined Bob most was his love for his family, the value he placed on his many friendships and laughter. He was never without a joke right up to the end and right through his most difficult times. Everyone who knew Bob can smile right now remembering him this way and how he touched the lives of many with his humour, his compassion and his love of life. A huge thank you to all Bob's friends who kept in touch, visited, shared a laugh and a glass of wine throughout his courageous fight with cancer. MacLEAN, Walter Menzies

October 10th, 1931 - November 8th, 2012

Walter was born in Glasgow Scotland and although he lived in Canada for almost 60 years, he had a lovely strong accent his whole life. Dad followed his father's career and although not a steam locomotive engineer, he became an engineer and retired as the Executive Director for Hospital Planning and Construction, Ministry of Health prior to the inception of VIHA. Dad worked diligently at ensuring hospitals around B.C. met the needs of the communities, overseeing construction of new hospitals and required upgrades. Dad was passionate about the health and medical care for seniors and upon his retirement Dad volunteered for 12 years as a member on the Board at the Lodge at Broadmead, spending many of those years as Chair. An active, avid outdoorsman who was a long standing member of the Sidney Lawn Bowling Club, Dad loved to bowl, socialize and work with other members to have the Club stand as it does today. He got tremendous enjoyment on the greens in summer; carpet bowls in the winter; and of course, the social times such as Robbie Burns dinner piping in the haggis. Dad was also passionate about travelling and living an energetic outdoor life and was a fixture on the Sidney waterfront walkways. Many of his holidays were spent hiking the many great, natural wonders of Canada, the U.S and Europe. His last great outdoor trip was this past summer hiking the Cinque Terre trail in Italy with his "Cheshire Girl", Jose. Dad was a beloved Father, Grandfather and friend to many and while we have a hole in our hearts with his passing, we cherish the many memories and values he has given to us. Dad loved his family dearly and enjoyed family celebrations and dinners, most recently arranging his own 80th birthday celebration last year with the whole family at Whistler. Dad was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Peggy; brothers Iain and Jim; first wife Helen (our Mom); and beloved second wife, Carol. He is sadly missed by his son Wally (Ann); daughters Kristine; Cory (Doug); Janis (Mike); and his two beloved granddaughters Brenna and Emma who adored him; his special friend and companion, Jose; and his many friends. MITCHELL, Bruce

May 11, 1952 - November 9, 2012

With profound sadness in our hearts, we mourn the passing of a loving and devoted father, brother and friend. Bruce was born and raised in Red Deer, Alberta, a vibrant, mischievous kid with a love for collecting and exploring. His adventurous spirit eventually brought him west, where he settled, first in Prince George, then in Victoria. In Victoria, he and his wife Valerie had two daughters, who loved to swim, hike, play tennis and talk with their dad. He always loved his adopted city on the wild west coast. Bruce's entire family eventually followed him to Victoria, and he was always keenly aware of how fortunate he was to live close to the family he loved so much. In 1979, after graduating from UVic with a Bachelor of Child Care degree, Bruce founded Nisika Community Services. "Nisika" is a word from the Chinook language that means "working together." Working together with a wonderful group of colleagues, who he also called friends, and the community at large, he created an organization that served the diverse needs of many people in Greater Victoria. Bruce always wore his heart on his sleeve and demonstrated a deep and tender concern for all people. He loved animals, and had a certain gentle way with them. He took great joy in the small gestures of friendship, and those who became his friends were friends for life. More than anything else, Bruce wanted to make the lives of those around him better.

We will remember him for his generous spirit, quick wit, unyielding loyalty, and kind, sensitive heart. Bruce was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Jack and Anne Mitchell. He is survived by his two daughters, Lindsay (Bianca) and Ali, his ex-wife (Valerie), his brother John (Janet) Mitchell, and sister Joanne (Mike) Nusbaum, and his nieces and nephews, whom he adored.

A service will be held at 2: 30 pm on Saturday, November 17th at the UVic Interfaith Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be sent to: Victoria Dandelion Society, PO Box 8648 Stn Central, Victoria BC, V8W 9Z9; or at hopeliveshere.ca

TRAVIS, Margaret Mary

August 23, 1933 - November 11, 2012

Of Saanichton, died peacefully at home after ten years of coping with Alzheimer's Disease. Margaret was born in Melbourne, Australia to Theo Moody and Veronica Fanning. Her mother died when Margaret was eight and her father subsequently remarried. With her older brother Jon, the family moved to New York during World War 11, where her father was posted as a foreign correspondent for an Australian newspaper. This experience whetted Margaret's appetite for travel. Back home after the war Margaret was awarded a scholarship to study at Sydney Teacher's College. She graduated from the National Art School and from college in 1954 with a Special Art Teacher's Diploma. She taught in various schools in NSW and, frustrated with the inequity of pay and conditions for female teachers in her native country, travelled to the UK and then on to British Columbia, where she would remain for the rest of her life. She spent two years as a teacher in Grand Forks then furthered her studies, gaining a Master of Science degree in 1967 and a Doctor of Education in 1974. She was an Assistant Professor and later an Associate Professor at the University of Victoria, took a leadership role in the establishment of the Canadian Youth Art Collection and was instrumental in leading the K-3 James Bay Community Project in Victoria. Margaret was an inspired teacher who nurtured her students and was determined to make her art room a positive, relaxed and creative environment. She loved Canada and became a citizen in the early 1970's. In 1977 she married fellow teacher Ken Travis and together they developed 10 acres of rural land on the Saanich Peninsula as a commercial kiwi fruit farm. During this period Margaret was a loving carer of Ken's ageing parents. She embraced farm life and took early retirement from the university in 1978. She remained an active member of the community, involved in Saanich Agricultural Societies and a local art group, which met weekly and held annual exhibitions. She was a great supporter of the indigenous community, donating scholarship funds to the university. Margaret was a down to earth woman, a humanitarian with great warmth and a lively sense of humor. For the last five years of her life she was cared for, with dedication, by Fedema Sapalo. supported by a team of marvelous caregivers. She is survived by her husband Ken and his extended family; by her brothers Jon and Daniel, sister Mary and their families in Australia.

An informal gathering of friends and family will be held at Dalmeny Farm, 1485 Newton Heights Saanichton on Monday, November 19 between 3-5pm.
