A brush fire in East Sooke Regional Park has been extinguished, according to the East Sooke Fire Department.

In a Facebook post about noon Monday, the department said crews remained at the scene and cleanup was underway.

Firefighters from the Metchosin and Otter Point departments also responded.

The fire, reported just before 7 a.m. Monday, began as a “rank one” — the lowest of six rankings, indicating a smouldering ground fire — and was located near O’Brien Point, according to the East Sooke Fire Department.

Metchosin Fire Chief Stephanie Dunlop said crews established perimeter control of the fire, which was estimated at 60 by 90 metres in size.

The Capital Regional District said Monday evening that some trails in the park remained closed.

It was the second fire in a regional park in the past few days. Over the weekend, firefighters responded to a one-hectare fire in Thetis Lake Regional Park in View Royal.

The CRD said an area near Seymour Hill remained closed to the public.
