The Capital Regional District is warning the public to avoid the waters at Island View Beach in Central Saanich due to a nearby wastewater discharge earlier this week.

Beach advisory signs are being posted as a precautionary measure in consultation with Island Health, which was responsible for monitoring water quality at public beaches until 2019.

The signs will be in place for about a week until sample testing of indicator bacteria confirms that the sewage discharge is not affecting the immediate marine environment.

Saltwater beach advisories are recommended in the event of a possible public health hazard or when more than 175 enterococci bacteria are found in a sample and are lifted when there is no longer a risk to swimmers.
