A 67-year-old woman was hit in the face after approaching a man lighting grass on fire in front of an apartment building on Fort Street early Wednesday evening, Victoria police say.
The woman suffered what police describe as potentially life-altering injuries in the assault.
Police said the woman and a 66-year-old man were in the 1300-block of Fort Street, near Craigdarroch Castle, about 7 p.m. when the altercation happened.
Police said the woman was struck in the face and the man was pushed. The would-be arsonist also tried to hit a third person.
The man fled but was arrested a short distance away.
The woman was transported to hospital.
Police said the suspect faces aggravated assault and assault charges and was held in custody to appear in court.
VicPD isn’t revealing any other details about the assault, as the matter is now before the courts.
