Counter Attack pulls 29 impaired drivers off the road in four days, but drunken-driving warnings not getting through

Victoria police say anti-drinking and driving messages are not getting through to motorists after officers found a high number of impaired drivers during the first weekend of its Counter Attack program.

Victoria police say anti-drinking and driving messages are not getting through to motorists after officers found a high number of impaired drivers during the first weekend of its Counter Attack program.

In the four days of road checks in Esquimalt and Victoria — between Thursday and Sunday — officers found 29 impaired drivers.

VicPD handed out 143 tickets for various violations to the Motor Vehicle Act, but most surprising was the number of drunk drivers, said spokesman Const. Mike Russell.

“Yes, we’re happy we got that many impaired drivers off the road, but at the same time, why are we taking 29 impaired drivers off the road?” he said.

Officers also found 19 vehicle safety infractions and ordered inspections for all incidents.

Counter Attack stretches throughout the Christmas season.
