Royal Roads University posted a warning on its website Friday about a confirmed cougar sighting around the lower portion of Charlie’s Trail, near Esquimalt Lagoon.

The trail runs through the university grounds along Colwood Creek.

The warning, which advised using caution and keeping dogs leashed, comes after a pair of cougar sightings on Sunday near Royal Roads.

One of the sightings, on Colwood’s Matilda Drive, was of a cougar prowling in a yard that had a dead deer in the driveway. The cougar ran off and left the deer behind.

What is believed to have been the same cougar was seen in another yard nearby with a cub.

Meanwhile, at Thetis Lake Regional Park, the Capital Regional District has put up signs warning of a bear and cubs in the area, on the advice of the B.C. Conservation Officer Service.

“Park visitors can help reduce human-wildlife conflicts in all parks by keeping dogs on leash, staying alert, checking for tracks, claw marks, or scat, and by making noise to avoid surprise encounters,” the CRD said in a statement.
