A North Saanich house fire sent five people to hospital for smoke inhalation Wednesday night, including three neighbours who tried to help the two occupants put out the blaze.

The North Saanich Fire Department arrived at the Tseycum reserve residence and doused the flames, but not before the kitchen was gutted and the home suffered considerable smoke damage.

Unattended cooking food was pinpointed as the cause.
