A landscaping supply company in Central Saanich has been fined $27,211 after 1.5 tonnes of concrete paving stones fell and trapped a worker.

A worker at Van Isle Bricklok Surfacing and Landscape Supplies Ltd. on East Saanich Road had been taking inventory in the company’s storage yard when a pallet of concrete paving stones fell, pinning and injuring the worker, said WorkSafe B.C., which investigated the April 21 incident.

For privacy reasons, WorkSafe B.C. would not release information on the worker’s condition.

“WorkSafe B.C. determined that many of the stacks of paving materials in the yard were out of plumb or unstable, and there were no written procedures in place for how to stack the pallets.”

WorkSafe B.C. said the company failed to ensure materials were stacked or stored in a stable and secure manner, which constitutes a “high-risk violation.”
