The City of Victoria is considering transferring money from a revitalization fund to upgrade lighting and improve the walking surface of Bastion Square.

If the move is approved by council on Thursday, $150,000 would be transferred from the Bastion Square Revitalization Association Trust to the engineering and public works budget for the maintenance work.

A city staff report noted the city has a duty to maintain the square and address safety concerns in the high-traffic pedestrian corridor.

In the past, the city has set aside funds for the trust, but it hasn’t been accessed of late and the Bastion Square Revitalization Association was disbanded.

That left $150,000 sitting idle.

The staff report says if the transfer isn’t approved, other projects in the current financial plan might have to be put on hold to free up cash for work in the square.
