Car stolen from Victoria hits post, rolls down embankment near Nanoose Bay

The older-model Toyota Camry was seen drifting off to the right of the Island Highway as it headed north near Bayview Park Road, before hitting a lamppost.

A car stolen from Victoria was found abandoned Tuesday night after it sheared off a lamppost and rolled down a 15-metre embankment just south of Nanoose Bay.

Nanaimo RCMP said the crash happened about 7:20 p.m. The older-model Toyota Camry was seen drifting off to the right of the Island Highway as it headed north near Bayview Park Road.

“Witnesses ran down shortly thereafter and it was obvious there was nobody in the car,” said Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien. “Both airbags had deployed and the seat belts were extended so it looks like there was at least two people in the vehicle.”

The Lantzville Fire Department responded and didn’t find anyone linked to the car.

Police contacted the car’s owner, who said the vehicle had been reported stolen earlier in the day.

“Right now we’re just trying to make sure there was nobody seriously injured,” O’Brien said.
