Lifted fire ban

A campfire ban is being lifted for Courtenay and points north on Vancouver Island.

The prohibition on campfires and other open fires remains in effect on the rest of Vancouver Island. No open fires are allowed south of a line going through Nootka Sound, south of Gold River, to Brean Road, north of Buckley Bay.

Open fires are permitted on Texada and Harwood islands, and islands to the north.

Burning during a ban can lead to fines ranging from $345 up to $100,000 if convicted in court, according to the Wildfire Management Branch. If a wildfire results, the person responsible can be ordered to pay a fine of $10,000 plus firefighting and associated costs.

Dry weather and the risk of lightning led to the ban on Aug. 1.
