Businessman Wayne Strandlund has been elected as the next chancellor of Royal Roads University.

The 66-year-old Strandlund will take office in January and succeeds J. Peter Meekison as the university’s fifth chancellor — the titular head of the institution — and chairman of the board of governors. The chancellor also confers degrees.

Strandlund is CEO of Fisgard Capital Corporation, a mortgage-investment company he founded in 1994. He has a creative writing degree from the University of Victoria.

“I am honoured to be chosen for this role,” Strandlund said in a statement. “I will do my best to help guide and support RRU’s strong educational contribution to the people of B.C.”

Meekison described Strandlund as an established business leader with strong community ties. University president Allan Cahoon praised Strandlund’s efforts with the Royal Roads board and many other bodies.

Strandlund, who has been with Royal Roads since 2011, is also a director with the Real Estate Compensation Fund Corporation and serves on the Victoria Symphony Business Advisory Council. He has served as president of the B.C. Real Estate Association and the Victoria Conservatory of Music, and was a founding member of the Canadian College for Chinese Studies.
