A man who broke into a home one block from the Victoria police station yesterday was interrupted by the homeowner and then cornered by cops despite hopping fences and dodging through alleys while trying to get away.

A homeowner called 911 about 1:30 p.m. when he found an intruder in his home in the 900-block of Green Street, said Victoria police spokesman Const. Mike Russell. He gave a detailed description and direction the burglar fled.

The home is less than a block from the police station on Caledonia Avenue, so police were able to respond quickly.

A woman flagged down a sergeant and said she saw someone dart behind an apartment building on Pembroke Street. As the two were talking, the man appeared from the apartment building and ran away, with the sergeant running after him.

The man jumped over two fences and ran into the path of a police officer. The man tried to dodge the constable but he was arrested.

A 21-year-old Victoria man is facing charges of breaking and entering and possession of stolen property.
