A 10-year-old boy on a bicycle is in hospital after being struck by two vehicles on a Nanaimo street.

Nanaimo RCMP responded about 4:45 p.m. Thursday to a report of a child on a bike struck by two motor vehicles near Howard Avenue at Nova Street in the Harewood neighbourhood of Nanaimo.

Police arrived to find bystanders and fire crews providing emergency first aid to the boy. The boy was taken to John Barsby Secondary School field and flown by air ambulance to a hospital in Victoria.

The boy's injuries were described by police as potentially life-threatening but on Friday afternoon it was believed he would pull through.

Initial witness interviews and dashcam footage suggest the boy was riding his bicycle down a steep driveway and onto Howard Avenue, where he was struck by a southbound vehicle and then a northbound vehicle, police said.

Both drivers stopped and remained at the scene to co-operate with investigators.

A preliminary investigation suggests neither speed nor impairment were contributing factors on the drivers’ part, said police.

The intersection of Howard Avenue and Nova Street was closed for several hours while investigators examined the scene and collected forensic evidence. RCMP Victim Services are involved in the case.
