A boat owner was rescued from his sinking vessel early Sunday after he became stuck while trying to escape through a window.

The man started bailing when the 40-foot vessel took on water, then went for the window when it started to sink, said Nanaimo Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Stuart Kenning.“The boat was partially sunk and he was stuck halfway out,” Kenning said.

He said a call was made to Nanaimo Fire Rescue about 3 a.m., likely from a neighbouring vessel at Nanaimo’s Stones Marina. Firefighters arrived and got the man to safety, and he was taken to hospital to be checked.

The Nanaimo Port Authority was also at the scene, Kenning said, and the incident has been reported to the coast guard.
