Blast heard before blaze destroys workshop in Black Creek

The fire was so hot, it melted the vinyl siding on the owner’s home about 12 metres away

The owners of a property in Black Creek heard an explosion before a fire completely consumed a large workshop early Tuesday.

Bruce Green, chief of Oyster River Fire, said the the 20-by-30-foot shop was consumed by flames when the department arrived at the property in the 9200-block of Robin Road just before 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

He said about 25 firefighters from Oyster River and Merville departments managed to knock down the fire and protect a nearby greenhouse and pumphouse, but the shop was a complete loss.

The tin building fell in on itself, he said. The shop’s contents, including a yard tractor, were burned and investigators were waiting for the remains to cool before investigating the cause.

Green said there were propane tanks in the shop.

He said the fire was so hot, it melted the vinyl siding on the owner’s home about 12 metres away.

No injuries were reported, as the owners were in the house when they heard the explosion and saw the flames, said Green.
