More than 7,000 Greater Victoria residents will choose two-wheeled transit this week, say the organizers of a campaign to encourage cycling.

The goal of Bike to Work Week is to entice more commuters to embrace cycling as a means of transportation.

One in seven participants in the capital region said they’ll be biking to work for the first time — a primary goal of the campaign.

Organizers estimate a 20- to 25-minute commute for cyclists who lives seven to 10 kilometres from work.

Participants in the Victoria area can look forward to 17 “Celebration Stations,” that will offer free baked goods, beverages, sandwiches and snacks — including the south end of the Selkirk Trestle and Dockside Green on Monday.

And while 560 local workplace teams are already registered, there’s still time to join. Teams can sign up or learn about skills courses at biketowork.ca/victoria.

Thirty-six communities across the province have committed to participate in the 19th annual event.
