B.C. SPCA shelters are overwhelmed with cats and offering 50 per cent off adoption fees for adult felines to help free up space for incoming animals.

The fee reduction applies to all 36 B.C. SPCA branches until June 30.

Lorie Chortyk, general manager of communications for the B.C. SPCA, said shelters are overwhelmed with cats, mainly from hoarding situations as well as families who can no longer care for the animals due to the rising cost of living, mental-health challenges and other issues.

“We’ve been responding to many cases this year where up to 100 cats are being rescued at one time from hoarding situations,” said Chortyk.

Chortyk said the cats for adoption come from two recent cases — one involving more than 70 cats that were brought to the society’s Surrey facility and a large number of Himalayan cats surrendered to the society’s Sea to Sky location in Squamish.

In June, the B.C. SPCA took in 120 cats from a property in northern B.C..

Three small dogs and 120 cats were found in filthy and unsafe conditions in a trailer in Fort St. James.

The animals received care for infections, flea infestations, ear mites, dental issues and wounds.

The society is encouraging anyone who has been thinking about adopting a pet to do so now to create capacity in B.C. SPCA branches to help more abused and neglected animals.
