More than one Liberal is running to replace outgoing MLA Murray Coell as representative for Saanich North and the Islands.

Stephen P. Roberts, a Saltspring resident who recently retired as an executive in international banking, has joined the race for the Liberal nomination. So has Cordova Bay building contractor Stephen Chang, who served as special assistant to former Victoria MP David Anderson and on the leadership campaign of former Liberal prime minister Paul Martin.

Other candidates vying for the seat include Green Party candidate Adam Olsen, raised on the Tsartlip First Nation on the Saanich Peninsula.

Olsen resigned after five years as a Central Saanich council member after winning the nomination. He works with consultants to combat mould in First Nations housing, his website says.

The NDP candidate in the May 14 provincial election is Gary Holman, an economist. Holman has owned property on Saltspring for 20 years and served two terms as a director of the Capital Regional District.

Coell was first elected to the legislature in 1996 and served as minister of various portfolios, including Environment, Labour, Advanced Education, Labour Market Development and Human Resources.

The Liberals have tentatively chosen March 16 as the date for selection and nomination meetings.
