B.C. Ferries is offering free passage to newly arriving Ukrainians who have been displaced by war at home.

Translators and host volunteers providing travel assistance to Ukrainian citizens arriving in B.C. are also eligible for free round-trip ferry travel, the ferry service said.

Ukrainians who need to take a ferry to their final destination can book a ride for free by calling the ferry operator’s customer service line at 1-888-223-3779, ext. 6, and providing the route, time and passenger information.

They will be required to provide verbal confirmation of their Ukrainian citizenship with a valid passport date-stamped on or after Feb. 24 and a Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel.

After receiving the information, B.C. Ferries will book a fully prepaid ticket on a preferred sailing or on the next available sailing to the destination.

Ottawa’s CUAET program allows Ukrainians and their families extended temporary status and allows them to live, work and study in Canada until it is safe to return home.

The free ferry passage is available to both walk-on passengers and those travelling with a vehicle.
