The Queen of Coquitlam makes a stop at the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal during Summer 2022.

BC Ferries is asking travellers without reservations to avoid travelling to the Horseshoe Bay terminal Thursday afternoon.

The service notice went out to subscribers of the Nanaimo, Bowen Island and Langdale routes at 3:35 p.m. Aug. 17 notifying customers of vehicle lineups "backed up onto the highway."

"For safety, we are asking customers without reservations to avoid travelling to Horseshoe Bay terminal at this time," said the notice.

The vehicle space for the Nanaimo sailings have reached capacity for the rest of the day, said a 4:30 p.m. service notice. Foot passenger space remains but the ferry service recommends arriving at the terminal 45 to 60 minutes before the sailing and considering travelling to the terminal by taxi, public transit or being dropped off.

It's been a tumultuous Thursday for the Sunshine Coast ferry route, with two sailing cancellations in the morning, and a police incident delaying the Queen of Coquitlam in the afternoon.
