A barge that was blown ashore last week after a towing connection with a tugboat broke is still aground near McLoughlin Point and the regional sewage-treatment plant.

Transport Canada says it’s continuing to work with the owner’s representative and other partners on a recovery plan for the empty Lafarge cement barge, Metlakatla 1, which has no fuel on board and is not deemed a pollution threat.

“The owner’s representative has conducted a damage assessment and this will determine the subsequent actions required to safely refloat and remove the barge from its location,” the agency said.

Transport Canada said the removal is complex, and must take into account tide levels, weather, security and environmental protection.

The timing of the barge’s removal has yet to be confirmed.

Lafarge could not be reached for comment.
