A charge of assault has been approved against a former Sidney RCMP constable in connection with an on-duty altercation on July 12, 2020, in Saanich.

The charge against Edward (Paul) Mittelsteadt was sworn Wednesday.

Mittelsteadt is expected to appear Feb. 21 in Victoria provincial court.

According to the B.C. Prosecution Service, the charge was approved by an experienced Crown counsel with no connection to the officer.

The service said no further information is being released because the matter is before the courts.

B.C.'s Independent Investigations Office, which probes police-related incidents resulting in serious harm or death, has not been involved in the case.
