An arrest warrant has been issued for a man charged with assaulting a B.C. Transit driver last month.

Joseph John Janzen failed to appear Wednesday in Victoria provincial court. He was expected to make his first appearance in court since his release from custody.

Saanich police were called to Uptown shopping centre on Dec. 26 after receiving a report that a 54-year-old B.C. Transit bus driver had been punched several times by a passenger.

Police said the driver blocked the man from leaving via the front door of the bus because he was helping someone in a wheelchair disembark.

When he was asked to use the back door, the passenger refused and punched the driver in the face.

Other passengers who witnessed the attack grabbed the man and held him until police arrived.

Janzen was charged with assault and released on condition that he have no contact with the driver.

The 21-year-old was also forbidden to use public transit anywhere in Victoria.
