Victoria fire crews evacuated buildings close to a gas leak near the intersection of Fort and Ormond streets Monday afternoon, the deputy fire chief said.
Dan Atkinson said firefighters responded to a call just before 1 p.m. that a construction crew had struck an underground gas line, causing a “fairly significant” leak.
Buildings within about a block of the area were evacuated as a precaution, he said.
Central Middle School, just down the street from the leak, was not affected, Atkinson said.
FortisBC crews arrived around 1:30 p.m. and were trying to determine how to bring the leak under control, said Jas Baweja, corporate communications specialist for the company. Seven customers were without natural gas as a result of the leak.
Abstract Developments said in a statement its construction site was closed and WorkSafeBC had been contacted. No one was injured by the leak, the company said.
The area was closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic at the intersections of Fort and Cook, View and Cook, Linden and Rockland and Yates and Ormond.
The City of Victoria posted a message on social media about 5:15 p.m. saying the leak had been contained and residents were returning to their homes.
