West Shore RCMP say a shoplifting suspect driving a vehicle full of stolen goods showed signs of drug impairment when pulled over and failed a sobriety test.

Police were called about 7:40 p.m. Tuesday with a report of a theft from Walmart’s Langford store.

They were told a man was seen leaving the store with a shopping cart full of household items such as an air fryer, coffee maker and vacuum, then put them in a vehicle and drove away.

Police were given a detailed description of the man and vehicle and made a traffic stop within minutes.

A 39-year-old was arrested for theft under $5,000 and all of the items were recovered.

After spotting drug paraphernalia in the vehicle and observing the suspect’s behaviour, police administered the sobriety test. They then issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and the vehicle was towed.

The suspect has since been released from custody with an upcoming court date.
