The City of Port Alberni has restored water service after an unloaded logging truck damaged the main water line on Franklin Road on Thursday.

In a statement posted about 6:15 p.m. on Friday, the city said all water usage restrictions had been lifted.

The waterline was repaired about 3 p.m. and water flow was restored within an hour of that time, the city said, adding that the city’s water reservoirs are refilling. It said no action is required from residents, except at properties along Franklin River Road. Those residents have been contacted.

“We did what our community always does when things get tough — we worked together until the challenge was overcome," said Port Alberni Mayor Sharie Minions. "We are thankful for the community’s co-operation and for support we received from neighbouring local governments and First Nations.”

Residents of Port Alberni, Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District and nearby First Nations were asked to limit water use, with stage-three restrictions in effect, to conserve water already in the reservoir. The limits were in place for about 24 hours.

Under such restrictions, outdoor washing of cars, boats, homes and driveways is prohibited, recirculating public and commercial fountains cannot be refilled, and there are limits on when residents can water lawns and vegetable gardens.

The water remained safe to drink.
