A Saanich man is recovering from significant cuts to his head and face that police say he doesn’t remember getting.

Saanich police arrived at Royal Jubilee Hospital, where the 39-year-old man was being treated, at 6:18 a.m. Sunday morning.

Police believe the injuries occurred at the man’s Adanac Street residence.

“The male doesn’t recall how it occurred,” Sgt. Dan Mayo said.

There were six other people at the rooming-style home, Mayo said. The man was in the common area by himself, while the others were sleeping in adjacent rooms.

One housemate told police that he was awakened by a sound in the middle of the night, but it didn’t seem out of the ordinary and he went back to sleep without investigating.

The remaining housemates told police they heard nothing through the night.

Early Sunday morning, one of the housemates woke up when he heard the man crying for help.

They phoned 911. But when they remembered the hospital was directly across the street, they walked together and arrived at 5:25 a.m.

A nurse contacted Victoria police, who handed the case over to their Saanich counterparts when they learned the incident occurred on Adanac Street.

The man was expected to be released from hospital Sunday afternoon and the injuries were not life-threatening.

The investigation continues.

“We’re still waiting to get a warrant to go in and search for any evidence to support any charges,” Mayo said.

But he said witness testimony has not led them very far.

“We don’t know what happened,” he said.

Police have not ruled out drugs or alcohol as factors in the case.
