Abandoned Langford townhouse catches fire, RCMP launch investigation

West Shore RCMP are working to determine if someone deliberately set fire to an abandoned building Tuesday.

Around 6:15 p.m. a man who lives in the neighbourhood saw smoke coming from the roof of an empty townhouse at 554 Goldstream Ave. He called 911 and Langford firefighters arrived to put out the blaze.

RCMP are treating the case as suspicious, said West Shore RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Kathy Rochlitz.

“As this fire has occurred in an abandoned building, investigators are looking at all possible causes at this time,” Rochlitz said today.

RCMP major crime investigators, a forensics team and fire inspector were on scene today to determine where the fire originated or whether any accelerants were used.

Rochlitz said this fire is not linked to the one at a home on Sunday in the 2700-block of Sooke Road.

RCMP initially thought that fire might have been suspicious since it started in a wood pile when no one was home but have now ruled it accidental.

RCMP are canvassing for witnesses in the area at the time of Tuesday’s fire. Call West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
