B.C. Transit in Greater Victoria is getting nearly $26 million in upgrades, thanks to federal and provincial funding details announced on Tuesday.

The funding includes $10 million to extend the Douglas Street bus-priority lane to the planned McKenzie interchange from Tolmie Avenue, $5 million to build a new depot and maintenance facility on Glanford Avenue, and almost $11 million for seismic upgrades to operations maintenance facilities in Victoria and Langford.

Other Island projects include $15 million each for new operations and maintenance facilities in Campbell River and the Cowichan Valley.

The funding is part of the $460-million Public Transit Infrastructure Fund announced jointly by Premier Christy Clark and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on June 16 in Vancouver.

B.C. is the first province to receive funding of up to 50 per cent of eligible projects.

The province will provide more than $69 million toward 11 B.C. Transit projects, with funds from local governments boosting the total to more than $195 million.
