An extreme obstacle race that promotes “mud running with attitude” is on tap Saturday at the Mount Washington Alpine Resort in Courtenay.

Mudd, Sweat and Tears is a timed obstacle course spread over five kilometres. Hundreds are expected to appear at the event, from which a portion of net receipts are donated to the Breakfast Clubs of Canada children’s charity. The course was orginally designed by an army cadet trainer.

Mud is an integral part of the race, in that entrants (many of whom compete on teams) are forced to navigate through it — and down it, and up it. A reasonable level of physical fitness is required in order to register, but organizers say that through great struggle comes team-building.

Individual registration is $91. The cost drops to $86 per person when you register in groups of four, and $84 when you register in groups of 10.

Mudd, Sweat and Tears is staged 17 times over the course of this year in various cities across the world. Mount Washington Alpine Resort and Fernie Alpine Resort are the only stops in B.C.
