Rev. Donald O’Connor, once considered the “golden boy” of the Unity Church, died in Victoria on Christmas Eve. He was 96.

He was one of only a handful of surviving people who were trained by the movement’s founders, Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, who established the Unity Church in 1889 in Kansas City, Missouri.

“Rev. Donald defined the movement in Canada for a time between 1937 and the 1970s,” said Rev. David Durksen, who was a close friend for the past 30 years.

“In that time he was the head of the Unity movement as well as holding other important posts. He leaves a legacy of having trained many of the top ministers and authors of the church from the 1970s to the 1990s.”

O’Connor was retired and held the position of minister emeritus at Unity of Victoria since he moved here 25 years ago. He enjoyed speaking in the church and performing marriages well into his retirement, Durksen said.

O’Connor is survived by his wife, Beryl, and son, Kelly.

A celebration of his life was held Friday. — Pedro Arrais
