Find out why Red Laver seaweed is considered a cultural keystone species - and the best seaweed on the coast - at the Floating Ideas lecture series at Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre on Monday.
The seaweed, a marine alga in Rhodophyta, the Red Algae group, is used as food and medicine in many parts of the world.
It is rich in essential nutrients and can be prepared in different ways.
It continues to be harvested by many First Nations communities in the Pacific Northwest.
The lecture will be hosted by Dr. Nancy Turner, ethnobotanist and ethnoecologist at the School of Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria.
Regular admission to the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre applies.
