Each summer, the Fair at the PNE somehow outdoes itself in sourcing the most intense new foods imaginable. “Our team has searched across the continent for the most insane and outrageous snacks we can find because food is an important part of the Fair experience,” said Peter Male, vice-president of sales at the PNE. From a long list of new diet-destroying treats, here are five particularly whacky offerings for the 2016 Fair, which runs Aug. 20 to Sept. 5.

Bacon Candy Floss

Bacon lovers looking for something on the sweeter side will adore the Fair’s new bacon candy floss. A fluffier alternative to Canadians’ favourite breakfast meat, bacon candy floss is the PNE’s own special offering and a good contender for dessert after a visit to the 6th Annual Vancouver Rib Festival Competition. For the faint of heart, there are still maple, chocolate and traditional sugar-flavoured versions.

Salted Caramel Deep Fried Coffee

In recent years, culinary crusaders have graced fairgoers with deep-fried bubblegum, coke and beer. Now, Ogopogo Concessions has managed to deep-fry coffee, with toppings such as mocha chips, espresso flakes, French vanilla, cream and sugar and highly recommended salted caramel. We advise against asking staff at the Deep Fried Coffee Treats stand for anything decaf, non-fat or sugar-free.

Big Pickle Corn Dog

Grab a really big pickle. Stuff it with a hot dog wiener. Smother both in cornmeal batter and deep-fry until crispy and golden-brown. Then behold this monstrous creation, conveniently served on a stick and sure to please those who relish a gherkin with their dog. Pick one up at the Chicky’s Chicken booth.

Mac N Cheese Stuffed Burger

It’s impressive how much creamy macaroni and cheese can be crammed inside a hand-made burger patty. Tin Lizzy Concessions has tested the limits of beef at its Handmade Burgers booth with the Mac N Cheese Stuffed Burger, which is probably best eaten after riding The Beast. It has lettuce and tomatoes, too, but that’s not why anyone will order it.

Mini Donut Ice Pop

Even on a sweltering summer day, piping-hot mini donuts are a must-eat treat at the Fair. But this year, innovative Cloud Nine Cotton Candy Company is bringing a refreshing twist to the fried classic with its mini-donut ice pop, made with frozen dulce-caramel ice cream and cinnamon.
