Help continue the charitable work of a little-known Canadian international success story by attending a fundraising dinner Friday night for the Victoria-Vanuatu Physician Project.

The organization has been in existence since 1991, quietly providing continuous physician staffing for the Lenakel Hospital on the South Pacific island of Tanna, Vanuatu.

To date, more than 30 doctors and their families from Victoria and southern Vancouver Island have served six-month terms, looking after the medical needs of a population of 45,000. The doctors' family members invariably find creative avenues to share knowledge with the local communities, and vice versa.

Dinner is $120, which includes an income-tax receipt for a $60 charitable donation. This year, Sir Richard Feachem, an internationally recognized expert in public health and development, is the featured speaker. The event starts at 6 p.m. Friday at the Marriott Victoria Inner Harbour, 728 Humboldt St.

Tickets can be ordered via credit card through the Victoria-Vanuatu Physician Project website at vivaproject.ca.
