Decorated pumpkins back in Oak Bay

Hundreds of orange orbs will fill Oak Bay Village starting Friday for the second annual Pumpkin Art on the Avenue, which has expanded this year to include even more festive events.

Hundreds of orange orbs will fill Oak Bay Village starting Friday for the second annual Pumpkin Art on the Avenue, which has expanded this year to include even more festive events.

Last year, carver John Vickers brought the ever-popular Pumpkin Art display to the Oak Bay Municipal Hall for the first time since starting the tradition on his lawn in 1998. Fearsome and funny jack-o'lanterns are on display behind the building until Wednesday, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

In a new event this year, Oak Bay businesses will battle in a carving challenge of their own, displaying their work in shop windows until Wednesday.

Visitors can use smart phones to vote for their favourites.

Oak Bay businesses also host trick-or-treaters Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Participating businesses are identified by pumpkin posters in their windows. A bonfire in Fireman's Park, next to the fire hall, wraps up the evening at 6 p.m.
