Why: Like opera singing better than opera storylines? Instead of dedicating the night to a single full-scale production, VCM's Opera Studio presents a program of arias and ensembles from operas by Monteverdi through Mozart, Gluck and Weber to Benjamin Britten. Think of it as a tasting plate, rather than the main course.

Why: Renowned for his work with the legendary Boss Brass, Victoria trombonist Ian McDougall is one of Canada's finest jazz musicians. Friday's concert is a rare chance to hear the 12-Tet (an ensemble of a dozen musicians) the trombonist deems "one of the greatest bands I've ever played in." The lineup includes saxophonists Phil Dwyer and Campbell Ryga, trumpeter Brad Turner and bassist Ken Lister. The 12-Tet will take the audience through McDougall's long and rich history in music.
