THEATRE

What: A Christmas Carol With Scott Hylands

Where: Mary Winspear Centre, 2243 Beacon Ave., Sidney

When: Dec. 17 to 23

Tickets: $10 to $25

(tel. 250- 656-0275)

Why: If I were a betting man, I'd wager this will be the Christmas entertainment of the season. Saltspring Island-based actor Scott Hylands is widely known for playing Detective O'Brien in the popular TV series Night Heat. He's also a very accomplished stage actor who, in recent years, wowed audiences at the Belfry Theatre. Now Hylands is staging his one-man adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Expect stellar acting. (Note: The show is grown-up entertainment, not aimed at children seven and under.)

JAZZ

What: Louise Rose

Where: Delta Ocean Pointe,

45 Songhees Rd.

When: Friday and Saturday,

6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Tickets: Free in the lounge

Why: Veteran pianist/vocalist Louise Rose comes back to local bars occasionally, and you can hear her playing as you eat dinner at the Pointe's Lure Restaurant. Her latest weekend stand at this beautifully situated venue on the waterfront promises to be a blast. Rose is an accomplished player in a wide range of musical forms including jazz, blues, gospel and pop, and she'll undoubtedly uncork a seasonal singalong or two during her gigs at the room's grand piano.

Where: Sugar, 858 Yates St.

When: Saturday, 9 p.m.

Tickets: $15 at Ditch Records and www.ticketweb.ca

Why: Thanks to the miracle of modern invention, Vancouver techno-head Felix Cartal has alerted fans via his Facebook page that new music will be on the menu for his Victoria gig Saturday night at Sugar.
