AIDS walk to benefit locals

Victorians are encouraged to get walking to raise awareness of AIDS at this year's Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life on Thursday.

The event takes place across Canada, but proceeds raised through pledges and donations in Victoria benefit people living with HIV here.

The Victoria event will start from Centennial Square at 6 p.m., continue along Government Street and end at the legislature.

"As much as we know that the landscape has changed for people living with HIV, there is still a need for support," says Karen Dennis, executive director of the Victoria AIDS Resource and Community Service Society.

"There's still no cure, even though treatments are improving. People are still being infected and ongoing support from the public is crucial."

People are encouraged to register, donate (tax receipts provided), sponsor, join a team or participate in the walk on their own. Teams from local businesses and schools are always welcome.

The Victoria AIDS Walk is a joint effort between the Victoria AIDS Resource and Community Service Society and the Vancouver Island Persons Living with HIV/AIDS Society.

Registration starts at 4: 30 p.m.
