Inside the new Westhills YM-YWCA

Spring opening set for Langford facility

Be prepared for the long-awaited YM-YWCA in Langford and a smaller View Royal facility to make a splash when they open in spring 2016.

The Westhills Y is filling 62,000 square feet, including swimming pools, in the 72,000-square-foot building in Langford. A Greater Victoria Public Library branch and the Victoria Conservatory of Music will take up the remaining space.

In View Royal, 10,000 square feet is being leased by the Y in the new Eagle Creek development.

The local non-profit Y organization has been renamed as the YMCA-YWCA of Vancouver Island to represent its growth and further potential expansion up-Island. This past week, it unveiled a $2-million campaign to raise money to fix up out-of-date buildings at its Camp Thunderbird, and to support programs and equipment for children and youth at the Langford and View Royal sites.

“As our communities grow, so too does the demand on organizations who support communities,” said Bob Beckett, vice-chairman of the local Y board.
