Christ Church Cathedral marks the first day of Advent on Sunday with a special service of candlelight and sacred music.

The service is recognized as one of Christ Church's most moving and beautiful. Hymns, readings and carols are sung along with a candlelight procession into the church.

Gradually the church grows from darkness, becoming brighter and brighter until the entire chancel is lit by candles.

"It's one of our most memorable services," said Christ Church spokeswoman Catherine Allen.

Advent is the fourth Sunday before Christmas. It initiates a time of expectant waiting for the Christian community, said Canon Sue House of Christ Church Cathedral.

"It's time to make way in your in your heart, in your home and in your life for the new life that is coming into the world," House said.

The Candlelit Advent Carol Service is at 4: 30 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, corner of Quadra Street and Rockland Avenue. For information go to christchurchcathedral.bc.ca.
