FOLK

What: Shari Ulrich Band
Where: Charlie White Theatre, 2243 Beacon Ave., Sidney
When: Saturday, Jan. 5, 8 p.m.
Tickets: $35 from the Mary Winspear Centre box office, by phone at 250-656-0275, or online at marywinspear.ca
Why: Folk favourite Shari Ulrich will bring four decades of experience to the stage Saturday during her performance at the Charlie White Theatre in Sidney. The quartet, including bandmates Cindy Fairbank, Julia Graff and Rob Becker, will likely dip into Ulrich’s solo career as well as the catalogues of her many projects past and present, including Pied Pumkin, the Hometown Band, UHF (her group with Bill Henderson and Roy Forbes), BTU (with Barney Bentall & Tom Taylor) and the Highbar Gang. Always recommended.

CLASSICAL

What: Lieder at Lunch: On the Road
Where: University of Victoria School of Music, MacLaurin B-Wing Room B037
When: Wednesday, Jan. 9, 12:30 p.m.
Admission: Free
Why: University of Victoria school of music professor Harald Krebs (piano) will be joined by soprano Sharon Krebs next week for an afternoon of German lieder on campus. Lieder at Lunch — think Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, or Richard Strauss — is free and open to the public. A trip to Gordon Head never sounded so sweet.

COUNTRY

What: Aaron Pritchett with Kira Isabella and David James
Where: Charlie White Theatre, 2243 Beacon Ave., Sidney
When: Friday, Jan. 11, 7:30 p.m.
Tickets: Sold out
Why: Aaron Pritchett’s 23-date tour of Canada — which starts next week at Sidney’s Charlie White Theatre — is heavy on dates in B.C. and Alberta, which makes perfect sense. Pritchett does big business out West, as evidenced by his sold-out tour opener in Sidney. There’s good news for those who missed out initially, as Pritchett and guests Kira Isabella and David James will perform Jan. 12 in Nanaimo at the Queens Hotel and Jan. 13 in Cumberland at the Waverly Hotel.
