Incumbent New Democrat Rachel Blaney was fending off a challenge from Conservative Shelley Downey in North Island-Powell River on Monday night.
About 1,300 votes separated the candidates with 253 of 254 polls counted. Blaney had 20,472 votes to Downey’s 19,125. Liberal Jennifer Grenz was in third, well back with almost 6,876 votes.
Yet to be counted are the riding’s 9,137 special ballots. That process will begin Tuesday and could take several days.
If elected, this would be Blaney’s third term. She was first elected in 2015.
